Russia pounds Ukrainian energy facilities with missile and drone barrage

According to Ukrainian officials, energy infrastructure in five regions of Ukraine has been damaged by a series of missile and drone attacks carried out by Russian forces. Ukrenergo, Ukraine's national grid operator, reported that the facilities in the eastern Donetsk, southeastern Zaporizhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as well as the Kirovohrad and Ivano-Frankivsk regions in the center and west of the country, were targeted in these attacks.

Ukrenergo reported that the Russians conducted another attack on Ukrainian energy facilities this morning. This marks the sixth significant missile and drone assault on the civilian energy infrastructure since March. The Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 35 out of 53 Russian missiles and 46 out of 47 Russian drones, as confirmed by the air force commander. Following a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian defense ministry stated on Saturday that retaliatory strikes were carried out on Ukraine's energy facilities, which support the military-industrial complex and store weapons supplied by Western countries.

The ongoing bombardments by Russia since March have severely impacted the Ukrainian power infrastructure, resulting in widespread blackouts and record-high electricity imports. Due to the attacks, DTEK, the largest private energy-generating company in Ukraine, reported serious damage to its two thermal power plants. Regional authorities mentioned that firefighters were working to extinguish fires at various locations hit by the strikes, with no immediate reports of casualties.
