In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a "special military operation" in Ukraine intending to swiftly conquer the Eastern European nation. However, Ukraine's resilient defense efforts surpassed expectations and hindered the advancement of Russian forces. This also ignited hopes among Ukrainians that the conflict could potentially lead to the restoration of control over Crimea. Nevertheless, Ukraine's military is now apprehensive about the possibility of Western military aid, which plays a vital role in strengthening the country's defense, coming to an end.

During a CBS interview, Zelenskiy expressed his concerns about the escalating situation on the battlefield and emphasized the urgent need for support. He warned that if Vladimir Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, Russia's war could quickly spread to Nato soil. Zelenskiy admitted that his troops are currently ill-equipped to defend against another major Russian offensive and stressed the importance of American Patriot missile defense systems and additional artillery.
