Russia-Ukraine war live: Two people killed in shelling of Russian-controlled Donetsk

This morning in Ukraine, two individuals were killed in the shelling of Donetsk, a city controlled by Russia in eastern Ukraine, according to the city's mayor, Alexei Kulemzin. Here are the latest key developments.

On Sunday, the highest-ranking military officer in Ukraine acknowledged the challenging circumstances prevailing in the north-eastern Kharkiv region due to Russia's ongoing assault. Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi refuted any claims of a major advancement by the Russian forces but acknowledged that his troops were currently in a defensive position. In a message shared on Telegram, he stated, "[We] are engaged in intense defensive battles. The Russian invaders' attempts to breach our defenses have been successfully halted."

On Sunday, a tragic incident occurred in Russia as part of an apartment block collapsed, resulting in the loss of at least 15 lives and leaving 20 people injured. The collapse was caused by fragments of a missile that had been launched by Ukraine and subsequently shot down by Russia.

This devastating attack is considered one of the deadliest in the Belgorod region. Russian officials have stated that Ukraine launched an assault involving 12 missiles, including Tochka ballistic missiles and Adler and RM-70 Vampire multiple-launch rocket systems. At this time, there has been no response from Ukraine regarding these allegations. Previously, Kyiv had mentioned that targeting Russia's military, transport, and energy infrastructure undermines Moscow's war efforts.

Belgorod, being close to the border, is a crucial location for Russian supply lines. The Russian defense ministry has labeled this incident as a "terrorist attack on residential areas." Online videos have shown rescuers searching for survivors amidst the wreckage of the building, with some fleeing as the roof collapsed. In other news, the Russian defense ministry has claimed to have captured four villages in Kharkiv, in addition to the five villages seized on Saturday. However, Ukraine has not confirmed these assertions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has reported ongoing fighting in several villages in the Kharkiv region and fierce battles in different parts of the Donetsk region. The town of Vovchansk has become a focal point in the conflict, with Russian forces approaching from three directions. The head of the Kharkiv regional police, Volodymyr Tymoshko, has stated that infantry fighting is already taking place in Vovchansk, similar to the tactics used in previous battles in Bakhmut and Avdiivka in the Donetsk region.
